St ALi North : Review

Thursday, December 27th, 2012

There’s no such thing as a soft opening my friend far from famished observed at breakfast the other morning, especially if you have a reputation like St ALi. We were at St ALi North, and discussing the reaction on Urbanspoon to Sal Malatesta’s latest coffee haven. Seems like the plans have taken a long time […]

Greenhouse by Joost – Melbourne

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

The Greenhouse by Joost is a pop-up restaurant with a difference, a “disposable” project if you will, designed to show us how to re-use recycle and reduce waste.

Growers Espresso / Eureka Coffee

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

Six or seven years ago I lived in (north) North Fitzroy.  A bit of a wasteland, the Loaded Dog hotel had recently closed and food and entertainment options close to hand were few and far between.
A new coffee shop, Growers Espresso, opened on the corner of St Georges Road and Holden street, serving locally roasted Australian grown coffee. My initial thoughts were … blergh – Australian grown coffee? locally roasted??  why would you bother?  Ten years ago, my Melbourne, and my tastebuds were very much directed towards strong, bitter, Italian roasted espresso blends.

Review: Seven Seeds

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Melbourne’s hottest new bright shiny coffee house in Carlton didn’t push any happy buttons for me today unfortunately. I was a bit excited by the buzz, and Melbourne Gastronome’s blogand the fact it was a sibling to Brother Baba Budan, but still I was a bit underwhelmed. I found the space a bit difficult I […]

Review: Birdman Eating

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

A lazy Saturday morning beckoned, and a trip to The Commoner seemed to be the order of the day, but alas, when we arrived the door was firmly shut. A quick scan through the mental rolodex of places I’ve always meant to get to, but haven’t – Birdman Eating. It’s not far away, the parking gods are on our […]
