About Essjay

Welcome to my ramblings about food, food politics, recipes and restaurants. I live in Melbourne, am a Royal Melbourne Show award winning baker and am interested in the chemistry of cooking and taste.

My mum was a fairly unconventional cook for the 70s. We ate curry, spaghetti bolognaise, lasagne and fried rice regularly – alongside the ubiquitous meat and three veg that many Australians grew up on. I doubt I’ll ever forgive her for not letting me have nutella sandwiches at school, but am grateful that she passed on her skill with pavlovas, chocolate profiteroles and carrot cake.

These days I’m a big fan of local, seasonal and sustainable food. I source of lot of my raw ingredients from my local Farmers’ Markets. I like to eat food that is inventive and whimsical, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Kinda like me.

I hope you enjoy my words, recipes and pictures. If you want to contact me, please email me at essjayeats <at> gmail.com or follow me on twitter @essjayeats
